some people are really crazy October 16, 2003
Posted by BatWeasel in : Work , trackbackOk, so I’m trying to get PcAnywhere (our main support tool) set up for a customer that just got a DSL Internet connection to replace her old dial-up. We’re trying to get PcAnywhere working with an IP address instead of through the phone lines, so I’m talking to this company’s hardware tech. The tech supposedly set up this network not only is located 50 miles away and never comes on site but also knows nothing about the network. Case in point: I asked her to help my customer open up two ports for pcanywhere, and she said “Ok, so what’s a port, and how do I go about opening it?” She doesn’t have them set up with a firewall even though they are constantly connected to the Internet, didn’t know what a router was, and was extremely shaky on the concept of internal versus external IP’s. How this woman set up a network I have no idea.
I call back my customer and mention that her hardware person wasn’t very knowledgeable and they might consider looking into more local support that could come on site when they need help. The customer’s response was “If I have to look for local hardware support I’m just going to do without PcAnywhere!” Ok, can we say nutso? “Please, please don’t make me look for a hardware person that lives less than an hour away and knows about networking… anything but that!”
