User of the Day June 30, 2004

I helped a user set up a hosts file on his computer (fyi, that’s a file that tells a computer exactly what the IP address associated with a certain doman name is, so they don’t have to rely on DNS). On our way in to edit the file we went through the System32 folder. He asks me when we’re done “Hey, can I go back and clean some of that junk out of the System32 folder? None of those file names mean anything and they’re just clogging up my hard drive.”

It was hard not to giggle, but I did keep a straight face long enough to tell him that if he tried, his computer would probably never boot up again. I’m glad I saved a poor computer’s life today!

Lesson for the day - just because you don’t know what a file is doesn’t mean you can delete it!

James just won it so far for today with
if (DQRun(now)==false)
{
Console.WriteLine(”darn”);
} else {
Console.WriteLine(”sweeet!”);
}

Ok so perhaps we added some of that after the fact, but the conditional was all his. For some of you this isn’t going to make any sense, but take my word for it… its geeky.
btw, right now this outputs “darn”, but we’ve high hopes that in a few iterations we’ll see a “sweeet!”

African Queen June 29, 2004

This is to tide ya’ll over until AC gets his camping post done!

My husband has been working the night shift at Motomart these past few weeks, and some real characters come in there. One rather scruffy man comes by early every morning to pick up the previous day’s stale doughnuts for his dog and chat with Jerod, so I’ve heard about him before. Today when Jerod came home he was absolutely awestruck at the story this man had told him (bear in mind, my husband is a teensy bit gullible).

Apparently the two had gotten into a discussion about meeting people on the Internet, and this man was telling Jerod about this gorgeous babe he’s been talking to who just sent him pictures of her. And then he mentioned that he saw a really beautiful woman in real life yesterday - an African queen who came into the place he works and proposed to him because she wants to marry a white man (and by queen he meant a real queen, the ruler of some country in Africa). She showed him pictures of her all dressed up, to prove she was a real queen, and said he would have all the money he wanted. Regretfully the man told her he was married already, and she left.

Jerod believed every word of it and was rather offended when I was unable to control my giggles anymore. We live in Shelbyville, population 5000, and even if this man works in Decatur that’s hardly a town likely to attract foreign royalty. And then the thought that she picked this man out of all the men she must have seen on her way to rural central Illinois… it was just too much!

I told Jerod tomorrow morning to ask this guy for the queen’s name so we can get her hooked up with AC. You’ve always wanted to be a king and live in Africa haven’t you?
