User of the Day June 30, 2004
Posted by BatWeasel in : General , trackbackI helped a user set up a hosts file on his computer (fyi, that’s a file that tells a computer exactly what the IP address associated with a certain doman name is, so they don’t have to rely on DNS). On our way in to edit the file we went through the System32 folder. He asks me when we’re done “Hey, can I go back and clean some of that junk out of the System32 folder? None of those file names mean anything and they’re just clogging up my hard drive.”
It was hard not to giggle, but I did keep a straight face long enough to tell him that if he tried, his computer would probably never boot up again. I’m glad I saved a poor computer’s life today!
Lesson for the day - just because you don’t know what a file is doesn’t mean you can delete it!

for the love of all things warm & fuzzy in this world…. don’t delete random files!
