That list has a name (and an acronym) and it is: Things to Encourage Aaron to Buy/Do because I Don’t Have the Money/Life-Insurance Policy. Michael started it and just might be willing to take a few good suggestions over on his blog, but rest assured he is checking this list twice.

Numb3rs February 23, 2007

Just finished watching this weeks episode of Numb3rs, man I love that show. Nerd(s) coming together with non-nerds and making the world a better place, each applying their skills to Make Things Better. There’s just one part I don’t like, when it ends. I know what your thinking, of course an episode can’t go on forever, but my meaning isn’t really what that statement implies. After the episode is done I walk to my computer wishing that I was more of an idea person, because in those moments (and its not just limited to after watching Numb3rs, for most of the afternoon the urge was there as well) I want nothing more than to create something Useful. Not just another RSS reader, not another solution (however clever) to make people’s todo list or schedule show up on their desktop or their website. It doesn’t have to be a program to help solve the problems associated with curing cancer. All it has to do is Make Things Better. So I sit at my keyboard, hands resting on the keys, willing the direction to come. But it never does. And so I sit, despairing of my inability to wield my skills to the genuine good of a hurting world. Though I know without a doubt that God gave me these skills for a reason, I envy those who go to work in the morning knowing that by the end of the day if they haven’t helped someone directly, then it will not be because they didn’t have the opportunity. The pastors, the physicians, the nurses, the therapists, the social workers.

Eventually just like this time, the despair yields to the knowledge that what I do can help people. No amount of code has the capacity to bandage a wound, but maybe, just maybe, if I do my job well, it can give a nurse a chance to spend a little less time worrying about paperwork or their schedule and a little more about making sure that bandage is on just right. Or maybe it’ll help that grandmother or child send or receive pictures of grandchildren or children without their computer doing things behind their back. Its not the Great Victory I’d like, but it is the daily victory that is within the reach of my skills.

I should probably save a bookmark to this post on every computer I use regularly. Through writing it I was able to remind myself once again of the things I can do, but thats not to say the despair won’t return again another day. For this one moment in time though, it is well, it is well, with my soul.

Live free or… February 12, 2007

There are several ways you can end the title of this post, however none is as strange as how Bruce Willis’s new movie chooses to end it. Live Free or Die Hard. Now I can see what they were going for, but I don’t think it quite works. Because when I read this title I ask myself, is Bruce Willis’s signature franchise actually threatening my freedom? I have to say I’m perplexed by this, why does Bruce Willis want to take my freedom away from me? Is his attempt to take my freedom half as absurd as the trailer suggests? And of course, does a terrorist really get his or her wings every time someone watches this movie? I’d continue to ponder this but I sense a renegade cop coming my way, and I’d like to finish watching this movie before he gets here. All you readers scattered across the country need to move to oklahoma so I have peeps to watch my movies with (technically I suppose I could take the peeps out of the fridge to watch the movie but their beady eyes make me more concerned for my freedom then any big boom movie title).

There are… two shoes February 7, 2007

As I was checking my mail after church I noticed hiding in the shadows directly to the left of my mailbox… two shoes. These shoes were not there yesterday, they don’t match and seem to have been placed quite intentionally. Is there some sort of southern neighborhood hazing that is initiated by the placing of shoes? The night after I remove them will my tree be tp’d or my house egged? I find myself unconcerned, after all I’ve got a back door that I can’t get open even after having removed the doorknob, so as I’ve told one person, if someone manages to break in they will save me the trouble of taking the door out of the frame. That and I’ve got a 14/15 year old dog to guard the house. So as long as they wake him up they are so… um… licked? I’ve been training an army of ninja dust bunnies though and they will probably serve as my front line defense.

…that the CIA’s headquarters in Langley is named the “George Bush Center for Intelligence”? Honest, I’m not trying to make a political joke at all, it really is.

… that some exits off the Muskogee Turnpike have readers for Pikepasses but no place to put money if you don’t have one? Are they tracking people with pikepasses as they get off, or are they billing them even though the cash people don’t get billed. It seems like the latter would get them in trouble, but that said, when I saw one coming, I put the pikepass as low as I could in the car, with as much between it and the top of the car (in fact, I sat on it). Could still have been read, but I fail to see why either scenario is really something I wish to participate in.

… that I had a date yesterday morning in Tulsa. Scheduled at 1am saturday morning, and I woke up at a little after 6am for it. I was awake, if unable to muster that complex of social/humor skills. That said, a reputable source has suggested that the possibility for a second date exists.

… that I’ve figured out how to affix my camera to my steering-wheel, allowing me (in 4 minute segments) to video-tape myself or my surroundings. The lack of a mic on the camera prevents this from getting out of hand at this time.

Walmart 2, aaron 0 February 2, 2007

I’m standing in a walmart right now, a much bigger one than
sallisaw’s. I find clocks, I find radios, but no clock radios. Can
someone else check their local walmart, I’m curious if this is a
localized thing.
