Glitterbeard the Boxfort pirate August 24, 2007

Glitterbeard

Surveying his domain, Glitterbeard repeats the mantra that has sustained him during all these years of piratical keelhauling across the seas of blue: Though cardboard and foam, wherever I roam, I shall always remember my boxfort home.

In other news, squeaker loves my beanbag, turtles love my back step, and though I don’t have a picture, cicadas love my new lawn mower (one was strafing the mower while I was using it).

I am sitting in the greenhouse attached to a walmart about 40 minutes from home. I have been sitting here for close to 30 minutes. I have already helped load big boxes for two different families. I wonder how many before they offer me a job. Hopefully I won’t get to that many. For the curious, I am sitting on a new lawnmower, which would fit in my trunk… If the lip (which I forgot to factor in to my measurement) were not so high. As it is, I was forced to pester chris and ask him to bail me out. But until then… Guess I will keep loading boxes.

Update: Chris had problems with a flat tire on the way there, eventually though all vehicles and lawn mowers were returned safely home. I saw a truck with a red spoiler on the back (right above the tailgate) that looked just like the A-team van spoiler, complete with red band going down the side of the body. Talk about a way to make it obvious you didn’t buy a truck to be useful, but to fulfill some vain hope that it’d make you cool.

Like running cable through crawl spaces filled with spiders, dead mice/birds and fiberglass insulation… but mom, at least this isn’t me in the video.

Loose Referers August 12, 2007

Warning, there be nerd rocks ahead, abandon all hope ye who read on… To avoid nerd rocks, Goto SafeHarbor.

I always have the worst time spelling the word referrer. When I’m working with PHP, or several other web-based development systems, I alway spell it incorrectly and have to go back and correct it. None of the development tools I use have built in spell checkers for obvious reasons, even well organized pretty code isn’t going to pass any conventional spell checker. I’ve always considered this typo to be an extension of the double-strike phenomena that bothers Michael so much and causes me to loose the dogs of war, when I really wanted to lose the dogs of war. An inconvenient typo to say the least when being chased by said dogs.

All that said, after I fix my spelling of it, the word always looks wrong, again I’ve just attributed it to my brain’s tendency to pick certain words and cling desperately to an incorrect spelling. But while poking around I’ve discovered I’m not crazy after all, at least not for this particular thing. Proto web-nerds from the 90s so commonly misspelled referrer as “referer” that the http specifications actually use the misspelled form which has as a result been adopted as a standard industry spelling. To which I would like to stand up and with my sternest look, tell the tech industry: Bad industry bad! There is enough creating of technical words, there need not be extra bastardization of the english language just because you kan’t spel guud.

SafeHarbor:
And as a result of all this, we routinely have to reverse the polarity on the substrates… Oh sorry, you caught the end of the nerd rocks. Hope you weren’t drinking pop at the same time, I hear nerd rocks and soda can make for quite the rumbly tummy.

Jax finally got around to sending me a picture, so I’ll make the official announcement. My brother Jackson is engaged to a girl that can only be described as amazingly patient. He proposed in mid june (promised to send me a pic shortly after, so blame him not me).

Further proving my parents rock, mom airmailed me a chocolate birthday cake, 2 cadberry eggs and a birthday card with 2 bucks for frosting. It dried a little in transit, but you would never guess from eating it that it came from northern iowa. Kudos mom, now maybe next year if you are a month earlier with this idea it’ll arrive 2 weeks after my birthday instead of about 6 weeks late ;)

From Matt Groening (co-creator of Futurama & creator of the simpsons):

Love is a snowmobile racing across the tundra and then suddenly it flips over, pinning you underneath. At night, the ice weasels come.

Random stories from younger days August 9, 2007

A story has surfaced from the depths of my memory of a time when I tamed jungles… with a mulching mower. One jungle in particular stands out, the only one that does really of the 6(maybe?) regular lawns I had in kansas city. I was walking the streets around our house looking for lawns that clearly needed work. We spotted one that looked like it hadn’t been mowed yet that summer. I am pretty sure the grass was as high as my knees. It was perhaps the hardest lawn I mowed in those years, I remember it was pretty hot when I did it too. I didn’t charge the woman as much as I should have, but she paid me more than I asked for, every time I mowed it actually. One of her sons had recently graduated from the high school I was going to. Apparently he didn’t think I was that bad either (or he just felt sorry for the white kid) he asked one day if anyone was hassling me there, offered to have some friends “deal with it”. Tempted though I was I didn’t name any problems by name. I think I mowed that womans lawn every summer after that first one until we moved.

Anyway, enough random story telling, to bed!
